Power, Identity, and Reform in the Gulf States

The name of this region is also controversial, where Iran calls it the Persian Gulf, but Arabs believe it is the Arab Gulf. For this reason, many prefer to use the term “the Gulf “ or “the Gulf countries” to avoid taking one of these two sides. 

The economic situation of these countries is not the same as their political circumstance. The rich authoritarians want to launch extreme reforms, but these are beyond their realm; in other words, they support all sorts of reforms except political ones.
